Dave Johnson Power Plant
250 galvanized 6½-inch helical piles to support foundations for a new substation at a Wyoming power plant, for Timberline Construction.
Dave Johnson Power Plant
Park Range Construction was awarded the contract to install the foundations for a new substation at a power plant in Wyoming, for general contractor Timberline Construction.
The original design called for 6-inch micropiles, but installation was scheduled for the winter months, when micropiles would have needed tremie grouting in extreme conditions. Magnum Geo-Solutions engineered an alternate design with helical piles, and the soft, sandy soils in the upper 15 feet were ideal for them.
We installed 250 Magnum galvanized tubular piles, 6.50 inches OD with 0.280-inch walls, 0.875 × 24-inch helices and 10 × 10-inch pier caps welded to the shafts. The piles met the engineer's lateral capacity requirements and torqued to the required capacity at 18 to 24 feet.
Two Park Range drilling crews, including night shifts, kept the job on schedule. Six load tests were completed successfully, and the job finished on time and within budget.
Scope of work
- 250 galvanized 6½-inch helical piles
- Alternate design to winter micropile grouting
- Torqued to capacity at 18–24 ft
- Six successful load tests
- Two crews, including night work
